Area overview

We acknowledge and recognise the Traditional Owners of the land within the regional area, being the Wurundjeri People.

The Eastern Metropolitan region spans from the middle-ring suburbs of Oakleigh, Box Hill and Doncaster, to the mountain-ash forests of the Dandenong Ranges and the vineyards of the Yarra Valley.

The region includes Monash's science and education hub, the retail hub around Doncaster, major industrial areas at Knoxfield, Bayswater, North Bayswater, Lilydale and Wantirna, and the Yarra Ranges food and wine destinations.

As it stretches to the east, the residential areas and commercial centres that support the knowledge economy transform into tourism centres around the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges.

The top five employing industries are healthcare and social assistance, retail trade, education and training, manufacturing and construction.

Opportunities

Eastern Metropolitan communities and the Eastern Metropolitan Partnership have identified a need for:

  • investment in recreational and sporting activities
  • investment to help young people find work and to eliminate the skills gap between graduation and employment.
