Area overview
We acknowledge and recognise the Traditional Owners of the land within the regional area, the Gunaikurnai People and the Bunurong People, while also including areas without formally recognised Traditional Owners.
Gippsland stretches along Victoria’s east coast from the outskirts of Melbourne to the New South Wales border.
Gippsland is one of the most resource-rich regions in Australia, with the industrial heartland of the Latrobe Valley, agricultural lands, coastal and lakes regions, highlands, snowfields and the forested north and east.
Major industries in the region include electricity, forestry, dairy, fishing and tourism. Other sectors such as manufacturing, engineering, construction, healthcare and education are also playing key roles in the regional economy.
Gippsland has a significant visitor economy with natural attractions such as the internationally recognised Wilson’s Promontory National Park, the Gippsland Lakes and the Phillip Island Nature Park, home to the world-famous Penguin Parade.
Opportunities
Gippsland communities and the Gippsland Regional Partnership have identified a need for:
- new jobs and industry to counter planned closures, particularly in the energy sector, and a plan to capitalise on a low-carbon future
- investment to adapt and grow the food and fibre sector
- improved access to transport and digital infrastructure and services
- development and promotion of cultural, historical, eco-tourism destinations and Traditional Owner and Aboriginal cultural tourism.
