Area overview
We acknowledge and recognise the Traditional Owners of the land within the regional area, the First Peoples of the Millewa-Mallee, being the Latji Latji People and the Ngintait People, while also including areas without formally recognised Traditional Owners.
The Mallee region is located in Victoria's north-west, bordering South Australia and New South Wales.
Its rural cities of Mildura and Swan Hill provide economic diversity, services, and employment opportunities to the region.
The land along the Murray River near Mildura, Robinvale, Swan Hill and Kerang is one of Victoria’s most productive horticultural regions.
Agriculture and manufacturing are the Mallee’s main industries with healthcare, social assistance and tourism emerging as key contributors for the economy and employment.
Opportunities
Mallee communities and the Mallee Regional Partnership have identified a need for:
- greater economic diversity to protect against downturns in agriculture
- research and development in the agricultural sector so Mallee primary producers can add even greater value in the region
- investment in digital connectivity to support economic growth and help address health, education and training needs
- affordable and accessible housing and seasonal worker accommodation to attract people to the region and enable business growth.
