Area overview

We acknowledge and recognise the Traditional Owners of the land within the regional area, the Yorta Yorta People and the Taungurung People, while also including areas without formally recognised Traditional Owners.

Bordering the Murray River and covering much of Victoria’s High Country, the Ovens Murray region has a thriving tourism sector based on cycling, snow, nature-based tourism, food, wine, craft beer and cultural heritage.

The region is on national freight and transport routes servicing Australia’s east coast.

Manufacturing and agriculture are important industries in the region with education, healthcare, accommodation, retail and tourism experiencing growth.

The Wodonga regional hub has a significant and varied economy, and provides services and employment opportunities to the region, including to residents in its twin city across the border, Albury.

Opportunities

Ovens Murray communities and the Ovens Murray Regional Partnership have identified a need for:

  • enabling infrastructure, including renewable energy technology and telecommunications, to support key existing and emerging industry sectors
  • digital literacy training to help the farming and tourism sectors to increase their digital presence and improve social connectivity
  • affordable and accessible workforce housing and seasonal worker accommodation to enable business growth.
