Area overview
We acknowledge and recognise the Traditional Owners of the land within the regional area, the Wadawurrung People, the Bunurong People and the Wurundjeri People.
The Western Metropolitan region extends from the inner suburbs of Moonee Ponds, Footscray and Williamstown through to the growth-area suburbs surrounding Werribee and Melton.
The region has a growing, diverse, and skilled population, including many skilled migrants, particularly in the Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Brimbank local government areas.
Recent employment growth is driven mainly by population-serving industry sectors.
The top five employment sectors are retail trade, manufacturing, healthcare and social assistance, construction and transport, and warehousing, which provide more than 56 per cent of the region’s jobs. There are major industrial areas at Laverton, Altona North and Truganina.
Opportunities
The Western Metropolitan Partnership, in consultation with local communities, has identified a need for:
- investment to support small businesses
- support to diversify the economy away from manufacturing
- investment in youth employment opportunities
- investment in community spaces and events that foster and celebrate multiculturalism.
